  2. Going back to what Brian was saying in class on Wednesday. This is what I think about "protecting your designs":

I personally used to horde my designs for fear that I would get 'ripped off'. When you do that, you are not putting yourself out there, no one knows what you are capable of. It's a shame that fashion and designs are not protected by copyright. It is way too easy to just right-click and save. Still, it happens to everyone--that's what comes with designing. So does that mean you shouldn't share your most original designs? No. Put it out there, let it be seen. By waiting you are inhibiting yourself, and, who knows, maybe someone else will come out with something VERY similar and you will get accused of ripping someone else off.

Take for example, the wrap dress. A revolutionary cut created by Diane Von Furstenberg in the 70s. A universally flattering silhouette, which probably cannot be said for one singular silhouette since the A-Line of the 50s. Her dresses retail for over $200, but has been knocked off by everyone at lower price points. Von Furstenberg is the pioneer. And people will opt for the original. She cannot go after every person that has tried replicating her style--it's impossible.
I guess you can just chalk it up to imitation is the highest form of flattery.
